NEWBERRY
DECATUR - George Louis Newberry, 82, Mesa, Ariz., formerly of Decatur, died 1:55 p.m. Thursday (Sept.3, 1998) in his home.
Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday in Dawson & Wikoff Funeral Home, Mount Zion, with visitation 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Mount Zion Cemetery. Memorials: Antioch Christian Church, 5450 E. Ocean Trail, Decatur, IL 62521.
Mr. Newberry was born Aug 25, 1916 in Mount Zion, the son of George W. and Louise Martin Newberry. George was a sheet meetal worker for A.E. Staley Mfg. Co., retiring Aug. 25, 1981, after 43 years of service. He was a strong union member, a member of Antioch Christian Church for more than 50 years, a 50-year member of the Grand Lodge AF &AM, South Macon Lodge 467. He was also a member of the VFW, serving his country in the China/Burma/India areas from 1942 through 1945 and a member of the Mount Zion/Dalton City American Legion Post. He married Nadyne Leek on June 30, 1941, in St. Charles, Mo.
Surviving are his wife of Mesa; four daughters, Carol Hite and husband Jesse of Macon; Cheryl Riedlinger and husband Robert of Decatur; Teri Jo Smith and husband Bob and Barbara Barnett, all of Mesa; three sisters, Eileen Stiely and husband Gordon of Henderson Co, Tenn.; Wilma Logan of Phoenix, Ariz.; Helen Horton and husband Jerry of Strongsville, Ohio; three brothers, Bob Newberry of Cerritos, Calif.; Lyle Newberry of Iverness, Fla.; Martin Newberry of Panama City Beach, Fla.; brother-inlaw, Bob Leek of Mesa; 12 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren and a host of friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mary and Lucille. |
